Belle Isle Conservatory
Belle Isle is a 982 acre island city park in the Detroit River, between the United States and Canada, managed by the City of Detroit. It is the larger than Central Park in New York City. Belle Isle is the largest island park in the United States.
The design for the island was created in the 1880s by renowned landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed Central Park in New York City. Highlights of Belle Isle include the Ann Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory (1904), a beautiful botanical garden and the Belle Isle Aquarium (1908). Until it's closure in 2005, the aquarium was the oldest continually operating aquarium in North America. Good News! The Aquarium has reopened on Saturdays for you to enjoy this jewel. Both the conservatory and the adjacent aquarium were designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn. Other places of interest include the Dossin Great Lakes Ship Museum, Nature Center, and Scott Fountain.
I grew up enjoying the beauty of the Island, and continue to visit and enjoy its' many features. Part of each sale goes to the Belle Isle Conservancy to maintain and preserve the Island's legacy, I support the National Women's Farm and Garden vision of planting 4 million daffidol bulbs in the City of Detroit-so far since 2010 over 65,000 bulbs have been planted.
